The MUR1560 series is HeroMicro a high-performance superfast recovery rectifier diode fabricated using epitaxial technology. It features low forward voltage, high surge current capability, and extremely short reverse recovery time, making it ideal for high-efficiency, high-frequency rectification applications such as switch-mode power supplies (SMPS), inverters, freewheeling, and clamping circuits. Available in multiple packages (TO-220AC, ITO-220AC, TO-263), it meets diverse thermal and mounting requirements.

2. Key Usage Guidelines
(1) Electrical Ratings and Operating Conditions
The MUR1560 is rated for 600 V, suitable for medium-to-high voltage rectification. Ensure the actual reverse voltage does not exceed this rating, and derate by at least 20% for improved reliability.
The average forward current is 15 A, but actual current handling depends heavily on thermal management. Derate current under high ambient temperatures or limited airflow.
(2) Thermal Management and Heat Dissipation
Thermal Resistance:
TO-220AC: RθJC = 2.5 °C/W (junction-to-case)
ITO-220AC: RθJC = 6.5 °C/W
TO-263: RθJC = 5.0 °C/W
Use appropriate heatsinks to keep junction temperature below 175°C. For TO-220AC, use a large aluminum heatsink with thermal grease.
For TO-263 (surface-mount), design large copper pads on the PCB (refer to "MOUNTING PAD LAYOUT") and connect to inner/ground layers via multiple vias to enhance heat transfer.
(3) Reverse Recovery Characteristics
Ultrafast recovery (trr ≤ 50 ns) enables high-frequency operation, reducing switching losses and EMI.
Reverse recovery current spikes may cause voltage ringing. In high di/dt environments, use an RC snubber or ferrite bead across the diode to suppress noise.
(4) Polarity and Mounting
The cathode is marked with a color band (white or black); ensure correct polarity during installation.
TO-220AC and ITO-220AC have mounting holes for mechanical and electrical connection.
TO-263 is surface-mount; follow standard reflow soldering profiles to avoid thermal stress.
(5) Reliability and Lifetime
Hermetically sealed construction ensures high reliability and long service life.
Prolonged operation at high temperature, voltage, or current accelerates aging. Conduct aging tests and long-term stability assessments in critical applications.
3. Typical Applications
Output rectification in SMPS
PFC (Power Factor Correction) circuits
Freewheeling diodes in inverters and motor drives
Clamping and protection for inductive loads
High-frequency DC-DC converters
4. Summary
The MUR1560 series offers a compelling combination of 600 V blocking voltage, 15 A average current, 1.5 V low forward voltage, and 50 ns ultrafast recovery, making it an ideal rectifier for high-efficiency power systems. By implementing proper thermal design, optimizing PCB layout, ensuring correct polarity, and mitigating EMI, engineers can fully leverage its performance for reliable and efficient operation in demanding applications.
