SS0520 Usage Guidelines

The SS0520 is HeroMicro a surface-mount Schottky barrier diode designed for low-voltage, high-efficiency applications. It features low forward voltage, fast switching speed, and built-in transient and ESD protection, making it ideal for rectification and protection in compact electronic circuits. To ensure reliable operation, the following usage guidelines should be observed:

1. Electrical Ratings

Maximum Repetitive Peak Reverse Voltage (VRRM): 20 V, with maximum DC blocking voltage (VDC) and RMS voltage (VRMS) both rated at 20 V and 14 V respectively. Operating voltage must not exceed these limits to prevent device failure.

Average Forward Current (IAV): 0.5 A at an ambient temperature (Ta) of 75°C. As ambient temperature increases, derating is required according to the forward current derating curve (Figure 1) to avoid thermal overload.

Peak Forward Surge Current (IFSM): Capable of withstanding a 5.5 A surge for 8.3 ms (half sine wave), suitable for handling transient overcurrent events.

Forward Voltage Drop (VF): Typically 0.3 V at 0.1 A, with a maximum of 0.385 V at 0.5 A. The low VF characteristic reduces power loss and heat generation.

2. Thermal Management and PCB Layout

Operating and storage temperature range: -55°C to +125°C. Ensure the application environment stays within this range.

Thermal Resistance:

Junction-to-lead (RθJL): 150 °C/W

Junction-to-ambient (RθJA): 206 °C/W
The high thermal resistance indicates sensitivity to thermal conditions. Use the recommended PCB pad layout (see “MOUNTING PAD LAYOUT” in the datasheet) to improve heat dissipation.

For capacitive loads, derate the average forward current by 20% to prevent inrush current damage during startup.

3. Package and Mounting

Housed in a compact SOD-123 surface-mount package (approx. 3.90 mm × 2.80 mm × 1.80 mm), ideal for high-density PCB designs.

Polarity is clearly marked (cathode indicated by a band or notch); correct orientation must be observed during assembly.

Lead-free (Pb-free) product with >99% tin plating, compliant with RoHS environmental directives.

4. Dynamic Characteristics and Reliability

Maximum reverse leakage current (IR) is 75 μA at VR = 10 V. Leakage increases with temperature—consider this in high-temperature applications.

Typical junction capacitance (CJ) is 170 pF at VR = 0 V, making it suitable for high-frequency switching circuits.

Integrated PN junction guard ring provides robust protection against transients and ESD, enhancing reliability in noisy environments.

5. Storage and Soldering

Store in a dry, non-corrosive environment; avoid prolonged exposure to high humidity or temperature.

Recommended for standard reflow soldering processes compliant with JEDEC standards. Avoid excessive thermal stress during assembly.

By adhering to these guidelines, engineers can maximize the performance, efficiency, and lifespan of the SS0520 in power management and signal protection applications.
